For over 25 years, Dr. Lipe has been caring for families. He knows how important it is to establish good oral hygiene habits in kids from an early age. Let Dr. Lipe and his friendly team of dental professionals start your child down the path to a lifetime of great oral health.
Why are baby teeth important?
Deciduous (or baby) teeth help a child develop proper speech, chewing ability and oral hygiene habits. Strong primary teeth help the jaw bones and muscles develop and prepare the body for adult teeth that will carry the child through the growing years and into adulthood. If a child loses a baby tooth too soon, the permanent teeth may shift or not come in correctly. Decaying teeth can cause unnecessary pain, abscesses, and can spread to other areas of the mouth.
It is never too soon to care for your child’s teeth and promote good at-home dental care and schedule your child for regular routine checkups.
Teeth should be brushed and flossed twice a day. Proper care should be started before the first tooth is even visible. Gently wipe the gums with a soft, damp cloth or gauze pad. Once teeth are visible, they should be gently brushes with a small (grain of rice sized) bit of fluoridated toothpaste.
Once a child reaches age three, you can use a slightly larger amount of toothpaste and, under your guidance, teach them to brush their teeth on their own.
You want to limit a child’s access to juice and never allow a child to suck on a bottle in bed. Bacteria can sit on the teeth and cause decay even though the child is brushing and flossing regularly.
Finger sucking and pacifiers can alter the bite of a child’s mouth and should be monitored by a professional dentist at their routine dental checkups.
